What will my first class be like? The most important thing to remember on your first session at Faber Jiu Jitsu is to have fun because regardless of your goals this is what will bring you back for years to come. Jiu Jitsu is a high intensity activity, a typical lesson will consist of a warm up that includes specific movements or drills, followed by a taught technique and finished with live sparring. On average you can expect to burn close to 1000 calories an hour when sparring, so bring a towel and plenty of water. Due to its Brazilian roots you can expect a hard working but fairly informal atmosphere during class. Sessions are interspersed with laughing and joking with friends one minute, and working hard on developing the skills to choke them out the next.

What do I need to wear?If you don’t have a gi (the uniform worn in Jiu Jitsu) then a t-shirt that you don’t mind getting ripped and a pair of board shorts or tracksuit bottoms will be suitable. Just make sure there are no zips or buttons.

Do I need to be physically fit?The truth is that BJJ is for everyone. This means that you start the journey where you are today. Your fitness will improve as you train and there’s no need to put off attending your first class.
